Catching up

It has been a while since I've written. I looked at my icons, trying to choose one to go with this posting, and realized they're all of characters (mostly Doctor/Rose) I'll not see again except frozen in time on shows already seen...and in fanfiction. I hope good fanfic continues to appear with 9, 10, Human!10, Rose, Martha, Donna and families because I'm not ready to say goodbye.

End of Time was, well, BIG. Filling. Fulfilling. Exciting, had me crying, had me hanging from a cliff, etc.

As for what I think about 11 and Moffat thus far...I guess I like more in the way of character development, relationship ... and excitement.  I liked the first show well enough but it didn't grab me or shake me. I will continue to tune in and see how things develop. Amy Pond I'm liking, and 11 himself is ok, but it isn't enough, at least not so far.

My Latest Dr. Who Fic Recs

I've been splurging on fanfic - finally taking a much-needed break from work.

Walk Out With Me to the Unknown Region  www.whofic.com/viewstory.php
by Rutsky. It is the story of Jack and the others who were brought back to life by Rose on the Game Station at "Parting of the Ways". Fabulous stuff. Take a look! While you're at Rutsky's page, check out "Com Estrelas", "Fire Escape", "Dreaming in Color", "Gossamer", and WIP "Hearts and Moons Recall the Truth".

Valiant  www.whofic.com/viewstory.php by MeiLin. The year that wasn't, a la Season 3's "The Sound of Drums" and "Last of the Time Lords." It is a bit dark, but those weren't easy times.

Everytime I Live www.whofic.com/viewstory.php by Lostwolf, which is a short piece, 9 reflecting on Rose. I'd also recommend Lostwolf's Journeys in the In-Between www.whofic.com/series.php

Heritage www.whofic.com/viewstory.php  by np complete. Beware, it is a WIP, but don't worry, it doesn't stop at a terrible place. Alternative Universe, no Journey's End, Rose had the Doctor's baby: this is his story.

When Everything Changed www.whofic.com/viewstory.php is a sweet 10/Rose fic by LJG. While you're at her Teaspoon site check out www.whofic.com/viewstory.php and www.whofic.com/viewstory.php for more sweetness w/ a bit more heat, and then head on over to LJ for a great collaboration,  Ever Was ever-was.livejournal.com/ ... excellent, excellent Journey's End onward.

All through the Night
www.whofic.com/viewstory.php by Significant Owl. A little more comfort food, Rose and Ten style. Also try www.whofic.com/viewstory.php for some Rose introspect with Nine, and for a laugh try her crossover with Hitchiker's www.whofic.com/viewstory.php

Castles www.whofic.com/viewstory.php
and Grey www.whofic.com/viewstory.php by abstraction. Be warned, it is angst-filled. "Grey" is the sequel, so don't stop at "Castles".

Porn Without Plot  www.whofic.com/vewstory.php  by the tenzo. Well yes, it is adult-rated. I was surprised at the quantity of porn-ish fanfic stories and wondered why they were so popular. In this story, Rose explains to the Doctor all about how women like their porn. Interesting stuff.

Both  www.whofic.com/viewstory.php  by wishiknewwho. This is another adult-rated story.  Rose is unfaithful. She makes her choice, and then has to pick up the pieces. As you'll see, there's a whole series exploring the aftermath.

Belle de Jour  www.whofic.com/viewstory.php by Chase820. Infidelity again, this time on the Doctor's part. A look at how Rose feels about that thing with Mdme de Pompadour. Umm, can't seem to have a story that expores this theme that isn't adult-rated.

There are others, but these are the ones I've been interetsed in lately. Good Reading.

Rude and Not Ginger

I recently was completely rude to a brilliant author whose fan fiction I really admire. It is pretty easy to miss the mark when you're aiming at the wrong target. I was aiming to share myself, my feelings and my passion about Rose and the Doctor, but I talked to this author about her characters and story in particular, and what my wishes for them were, which was a mistake. Folk Music and Fan Fiction

Lisa, you've got me thinking about fanfiction. Lisa posted an entry in her journal wondering about fanfiction and gender. A little earlier she shared a great reply she made to a Fantasy Magazine article on fanfiction.

So this morning I was thinking that fanficiton is like folk music, to an extent. There are people who just write, like you describe yourself doing at an early age. I had a few cousins who did that. The thought never occurred to me for some reason, who knows why. But music, well that was a medium I dabbled in. Read More...Collapse )

The Wider World

Weeellll, not much wider, actually. Still within this world of Doctor Who fandom, but branching out a bit from just the new series, and just Rose and Doctor.

I spent some time on FaceBook, which is a bit of a scary place for someone like me who likes to only have posted what I want posted and keep other things out of the eyes of everyone. Anyway, I wanted to connect more with extended family, so I worked on my photo albums and such there, put myself in the stream of everybody else's conversations a bit.

And...I called myself a fan of Doctor Who, and went to the wall (or whatever) there and read a bit. I guess I forgot about all the controversy with this new series under RTD, specifically with regard to the Doctor having relationships with his companions. From what I've been told, it looks like we're headed away from that starting with 11 anyway. Now, this is ok with me for a number of reasons. First, RTD has given us 10.5 and Rose, whose relationship can definitely be as domestic as anyone might wish to write it. Secondly, as I've been delighted to discover over this past 6 months, people can create as many missing scenes and alternate universes as can be imagined. But thirdly, I really don't  need the Doctor to be falling in love with his companions or anyone else... or his companions to be falling in love with him. I just think the writers are going to have to be consistent with this, and not ramp up the sexual tension. I guess I don't want there to be all this unrequited and/or unacknowledged love as a subtext.

So, back to FaceBook. One person suggested that it would be nice if perhaps Jenny joined 11, and the two of them could be traipsing across the universe. Hmm. That would be a safe (in terms of non-sexual - she is his daughter, after all) and interesting relationship to explore. And Jenny would be a strong female lead, and she could have all the relationship angst, if they needed that. It'd be fun to have a strong female timelord-y companion, without all the baggage from Gallifrey. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since reading about it - what a good idea!

Tension

Well, I just read the next installment of Rallalon's In Human Hands, and I was trying to figure out why I like is so well. I've actually never given much thought before to what makes a piece of fiction enjoyable for me. Breaking new ground here *smirks, rolls eyes at self, wants to hide face behind hand...my very own 3 Faces of Eve*

So this is me, doing a bit of critical thinking...

Children of Time Awards for Christmas

Wow, what a Christmas present. I found the Children of Time awards, just in the nick of time to vote, although I think they switch their day sooner than mine, so I have to get on it. I won't be able to read all the fictions nominated, and a certain fiction that I adore is noticeably missing (I didn't know until too late to nominate, alas), but I will vote, because some of my other favorite fictions are listed and I want to acknowledge them. And now I've found a few more that inspire me. Because that's the thing - the Children of Time Awards is actually a great big fan fiction referral site. The perk is that I found it in time to vote. I want to also mention finding a wonderful article on How to Review by Lady Chi, and Azriona's page of reviews and encouragement. All told, a nice Christmas package. A very merry Mary wishes you a very Merry Christmas, if you celebrate it, and a nice day regardless!

Rose and Her Doctor

A Doctor By Any Other Name

OK, I am still stumped as to what to call the post-Journey's End part-human doctor.

I like 10.5  for clarity's sake. Although I think its easier to say "ten-five" instead of "ten point five" , and I want to point out that the .5 doesn't mean he is 1/2 human. He is part human. There's a difference.

I stay away from ten2 because it has overtones of "clone" for me, which I don't like at all. He IS the doctor, not a copy!

Similarly, I don't like #2. Truth be told, I hate that Billie Piper calls him #2 during the Confidential interview and says it doesn't seem right to be kissing him. I like to believe that if she read some of the great fanfics out there about him, she'd change her mind. And I can't blame her for her loyalty to Ten, especially with all the ambiguity going around the set and in the script, and her loving the Doctor so much. But he IS the doctor, and not a copy.

Which doesn't explain why I don't mind duplicate 10th. It is used at Teaspoon as a category, and seems somehow neutral to me

I really like "blue-suit Ten" which I think I must give credit to only lyin for. What can I say except that it is so damn cute. In episode two of ever/was there is a fabulous conversation between blue-suit and Rose on the topic of just who he is.

Because that's really what this is about, after all. It is about Who this Doctor is. Names are important.

Which brings me to my favorite name for this doctor. Again, it is from ever/was, this time episode four. What is this doctor's proper name? Rose's Doctor.  The only problem with that is that to some, Rose's Doctor is still 9!

So the debate still goes on in my head, with me settling for calling him ten-five for clarity's sake when really I'm thinking "Rose's Doctor".
